How to create channels in Teams

Modified on Tue, Nov 8, 2022 at 12:08 AM

There are two types of channels in Microsoft Teams:

  • Public - Channel is visible in Channel list to everyone in the team. Anyone can view conversation and are free to join
  • Private - Channel does not show under Channel list in Team. Only invited members can see conversation. Channels that are private are identified by a lock to the right of the channel name

To add Channel

  1. Go to the team you want to create the private channel for and choose More options More options button > Add channel.

  2. Enter a name and description for your channel.

  3. Under Privacy, select the down arrow on the right, and then select the type of channel you would like. For public channels, if you want to automatically add the channel to everyone in the team, check the box that says "Automatically show this channel in everyone's channel list

  4. Select Add button at the bottom right.
